As mentioned in a few posts, 60 Minutes did a story on Lamborghini, actually it was the second story the venerable news show has done on the tractor maker. Scott Pelley presented the segment and it was well done. Within the first few seconds we see Pelley being blown away by driving a Gallardo. Of course all the armchair car critics will say "sheesh, he should drive a real car like the (insert your favorite exotic here)" . Just look at his face to understand he was excited:
Pelley also took an Aventador for a spin, lamenting the fact that the helicopter couldn't quite keep up due to its top speed of 170 mph vs the Aventador's top speed. Though it seems unlikely they came close, the Aventador was clearly moving quickly.
The story touches on the history of Lamborghini, but really explores the value proposition of Lamborghini not just in the product itself, but in the manufacturing process, and the design process. The cars are hand-built by the people of Sant'Agata and the firm is proud of the fact.
The story is well worth your time, 11 minutes and 44 seconds to be exact, not including the always interesting "60 Minutes Overtime" segments. The segments are now available on the CBS 60 Minutes iPad app (that's where each photo come from) and online !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! .

I watched it too. Although they reused several key points from their broadcast in 1987 (cost, number of seats, trunk space, footage of Mr. L. driving his tractor), I'm just glad that they did a story on it at all. Being CBS, I wasn't surprised by their issue with things like MPG's, gender inequality, and wealth-shaming. But again I'm glad they did it, because it opens up the excitement of our passion as automotive enthusiasts to a much wider (and arguably older) audience.

That was a great piece. I had a great time when the drivers pulled up and started taking pictures. "That's because it's Scott Pelley! Scott Pelley doesn't make it to Italy very often." My wife had a great time laughing at what a dork I am.
Still, it was fantastic.

Scott Pelley's daughter is a good friend of mine. I personally do not watch 60 minutes, so I didn't really know who he was other than my friend's dad until he took a few of her friends out to dinner and someone asked him to sign something for their (insert probably older relative). It's always funny to see other people react in certain ways to someone you just see as a normal person... It's even funnier to see that normal person on T.V.!

In the segment that was shot in the design studio what was the red crossover sized SUV shaped car on the left??
....... and as for trunk space, your golf clubs are kept in the pro shop and are on your cart when you arrive, ( and you have several changes of clothes at your mistresses apartment and your weekend house so why would you ever need truck space, and whatever you put in those little spaces gets cooked anyway ).

The "division of labor" part of the segment was pretty amusing.
"The car is a man on the outside, but a woman on the inside." or something like that.

I think you got it right. It was pretty good analogy.

It was definitely worth the watch and a great amount on info for the non-auto enthusiast and enthusiast alike for the amount of air time they had for the segment. Many 'a tears were shed within the editing department on this one!

Agreed. We saw a lot in 11 minutes.

Forgive me for being a bit disappointed with the segment. If anything, it showed the blatant gap between those who understand the passion of automobiles and impractical obsessions, and those who just don't have a clue as to why people have impractical obsessions.
The 1987 segment on the Countach was very different... and maybe it's more a sign of the ages. Though Scott Pelley was kind and enthusiastic, there was an overriding sense of apology to the story.
Jalops unite.

I liked it, but the part where they have to bring up practicality always gets me. These cars should be thought of as a private plane, or a cigarette boat. there toys not something to get you from A to B. 11 city and 17 highway, is pretty good for a 6.5L 700hp V12 in my mind. The Bugatti Veyron takes the crown for worst gas mileage if your wondering, 8 city 15 highway.

I wouldn't call them toys per se. To some they are toys, to others they are a passion, a hobby. And to others they are works of art.

OK, that's it. I gotta go. I have to get down there. I don't live that far away. I've intended to go there (& Ferrari as well) for a very long time. I think Ducati and Maserati are in the area, too. Knock 'em all out, I say.

I went to the Factory/Museum, and I determined that there wasn't so much gender inequality, as there was inequality based on attractiveness. I don't think they hire unattractive people.

My mom and I went to Italy, in part, to visit the Lambo and Ducati dealerships. On the way to Lamborghini we were having trouble finding it. We knew it was close, but couldn't seem to find it. As we pulled over on the side of the road two tremendous cars went flying by us, they were Lambos. "I think it's that way..."

Mine too! Before I went to bed, I re-watched the Morely Safer segment from 25 years ago. It was cool seeing Valentino Balboni as a young man.

Lamborghini has a fantastic museum that you can actually visit via Google Street Maps. It takes you inside the cars, etc...
Here's the link to an article I wrote about it.

Lol. I had a stupid question that a 10 second google search found the answer to. The answer being a Jalop article from a few months ago I missed, hah.

OK but Pelly looks like he studied Top Gear facial effects of Jezza and May and to only just to have a glimpse of Stephan Winklemann did not do him justice
![]() 11/04/2013 at 11:23 |

Yeah, I feel you on that...but it seems to me that despite Pelly's constant asking about it, everybody in the Lamborghini chain of command was pretty clear about what they had on offer.
Pelly looks at storage compartment "I certainly couldn't fit my golf clubs in here..."
Lambo Head of Design:"I think if you drive a Lamborghini, you are maybe more interested in driving than golf." Sums it up for me.

You have to look at 60 Minutes overtime. Pelley said his reactions were genuine, he'd never driven a car like a Gallardo or Aventador. They have a great interview with Winklemann. I think Lamborghini would have pushed for more Winklemann in the main story had they really wanted it, but they appeared to want the cars and manufacturing staff be the stars.

I agree. It was obviously going to be a bit mainstream/lame, but it obsessed on the "wow they are expensive and impractical". That was a huge trunk! Very practical :-) Who cares about your stupid golf clubs, you dont buy an Aventedor for golfing - you already have 6 other cars.

My GF fell asleep. I thought she was just being polite and letting me watch it quietly. It was pretty late by then though (I DVR'd it)
